Sailing and Cruising

With over 250 boat owners in the Club it is not surprising that sailing and cruising figures highly in the minds of many members.

Although we have yet to develop our plans for a new series of races, we are active race organisers for a variety of class events including Beneteaus, Redwings and Contessas throughout the year. At the same time we actively encourage members to keep their nautical qualifications up to date and arrange on demand a number of courses covering radio and radar, day skipper, international certificate of competence and first aid.

For those who prefer to cruise rather than race we offer an exciting but not too demanding home cruising programme, which you can download separately, and at the end of the year we will be awarding three cups as prizes for the best log of a cruise within the limits of the straits of Dover, Ushant and the Isles of Scilly for yachts, motor cruisers and for juniors.

While plans to convert Governor's Green into a Club marina is but a pipe dream and have yet to gather any sort of pace, we can fall back on Haslar marina where we hold a sixteen year lease on thirty berths eighteen of which are given over to the Victory Class, the members of which regard the Club very much as home. Interestingly enough, the Victory Class, one of the most famous wooden hulled dayboat classes that has raced regularly in the Solent since 1934, is to be brought right up to date and from next year be build in GRP. With only four boats having been built in the past twenty five years and with many of the original 72 boat fleet showing signs of ageing the decision was made last year to take a mould off an existing boat "Zephyr" (shown above) and obtain costs for producing brand new composite hulls and decks. The Victory Class race regularly from Portsmouth at least twice a week in the season and can always been seen at their best during Cowes week. It is hoped that the new GRP version will spark the imagination and attract more owners into the class, which has some of the closest racing and best social calendar of any class racing in the Solent. If you would like more information about the Victory Class please contact the Class Captain - Jeremy Lear on [email protected].

If you have joined us over the past couple of seasons you will recognise many of the events in this year’s programme as well as some new ones, we are however hoping to increase the number of participants this year. Motor and Sail boats are most welcome at all events and skippers may wish to adjust their departure times to suit the speed capacity of their vessels. The ideal is to enjoy the company of fellow members once we have reached the desired destination. Suggestions for Club development or new events are always appreciated. Please come along to our events and do not be afraid to bring a friend as potential new members all are welcome.

RNC & RAYC MEMBERS
Span the entire range of experience and qualification, the sailing committee members are always willing to advise on passages and port on which they have experience, and cruising with other boats is an excellent way of developing competence and confidence.

SAFETY AND LIABILITY
Skippers are reminded that they are responsible for the seaworthiness, competent navigation and general safety of their vessel and crew at all times during RNC & RAYC events. Owners must ensure that their boats insurance is sufficient to cover all third party risks.
